SEEKING RESIDENT ART TEACHER - November 30, 2006

Position available for art teacher in afterschool and arts programs that serve youth living in and around rental housing communities with the goal of providing unique hands-on programs that not only enhance the work of the Woonsocket schools’, but also introduce innovative activities that strive to work beyond the abilities of the school system. 10 hours of classroom teaching plus 2 hours of planning per week required, in exchange for 3-bedroom apartment in the Constitution Hill community in Woonsocket. Resident would only be responsible for paying utilities. Position is a renewable contract up to 3 years. Qualified candidates must have special skills and interest in art, experience with kids a plus, flexible hours. Candidates must take a drug test, and background check is required.

NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL POETRY RECITATION CONTEST - December 31, 2006

Through Poetry Out Loud, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. Each winner at the state level will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete for the national championship. The state winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. One runner-up in each state will receive $100, with $200 for his or her school library. Poetry Out Loud will award a total of $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends at the national finals, with at least a $20,000 college scholarship for the Poetry Out Loud national champion.
