We publish poetry, fiction, nonfiction, essays, artwork, and work that resists categorization. The journal was founded in 1947 and has since published an eclectic variety of work by established and emerging writers. Work first published in WHR has been reprinted or cited in the Pushcart Prize Anthology, O. Henry Prize Stories, Best American Short Stories, Best American Essays, Best American Poetry, and on Poetry Daily. If you have artwork that would reproduce well in black and white, or that you would like us to consider for the color cover, please send either a link to your website where we may peruse recent work or a zip file with 2-3 samples in (email-sized) jpeg format. Recent artists featured on the cover include Sandy Brunvand, Alexis Mackenzie, Amy Stein, and Patrick Foran.
