CALL FOR ART PROPOSALS - December 6, 2009

The new art project on the Berlin Underground, U10 – from here to the imaginary and back again, sets a focus on the social and collaborative dimension of public art. Artists or collaborative groups of artists and non-artists are invited to take part in this call for submissions. Preference will be given to artists who see their work as a means of exchange and shared dialogue and who are interested in reaching new audiences. This may include a readiness to collaborate with, for example, groups of BVG staff or passengers who have little experience of contemporary art. The organisers cannot take part in the call themselves. The U10 project will run for a maximum of 3 years. The organisers are looking for situation specific and/or participatory projects which focus on the Berlin Underground and its staff and/or users. They can range from being short, interventionistic artistic reactions to specific occurrences on the Underground to being long term collaborations. The competition sees members of staff, passengers, kiosk and snack bar owners, buskers and ticket traders not only as a potential audience but also as potential collaborators on a joint research of the Berlin Underground.

CALL FOR ART ABOUT POLAR IDENTITY - June 14, 2009

Global climate change has far reaching ramifications, the world as we know it will not be the world of 100 or perhaps even 10 years. Armed with a “new” awareness of how our actions impact the environment, how will this effect our ideas of ourselves? Polar Identity challenges us to take on a new perspective, one that can be both pragmatic and optimistic what is the fallout from new trade routes and passage through a once ice-blocked mass. How will these changes affect cartography, international relations, Easternization, religion, communications, etc. The new perspective upends the world, but what does it mean for the Southern hemisphere? We are looking for work that relates to our individual & cultural relationships with the poles, how countries relate to the poles and how identity is derived from our polar relationship. $1000 First Prize. Entry fee.

FILM FESTIVAL ABOUT WHAT IS NORMAL - September 30, 2009

Niet Normaal translates in English to Difference on Display. This new campaign from the Netherlands dares to seek and reveal how "normal it is to be different". Unspoken assumptions color our perceptions when we meet and assess others. Whether we realize it or not we are influenced in various, often unspoken ways by ideas about "the norm." Through Niet Normaal, artists, filmmakers and other producers are challenging how norms and difference operate in contemporary society. How we construct and adopt ideas about what is normal is examined in the context of today’s culture of perfection, consumerism and the growing interdependence of humans and intelligent technology. Entry fee.

CALL FOR BRAZILIAN ARTISTS IN THE US - July 1, 2009

Artists living and working in the US are invited to apply for the show scheduled for the early Spring of 2010. "What is your Brazilian Essence?" is perhaps a provocative question at the time when identities are increasingly hybrid and fluid. Certainly, it is easier to speak of "essences" rather than a unified, singular essence of any kind. This is particularly true of Brazil, the country which cultural heritage is as rich and diverse as the vast geographic area it spans. Yet, the question remains whether Brazilian heritage still imbues contemporary art works with any particular, volatile qualities. Against homogenizing tendencies of the global mainstream, we seek flavors and notes that strike unique and specific chords. Open to all media. Entry fee.

CALL FOR ART ABOUT MOTIVATION/GOOD & EVIL - May 31, 2009

CALADAN GALLERY presents a juried exhibition entitled "Motivation: Behind Good and Evil". What defines the manifestation of good and evil? The moral process is at the forefront of evolution. We, as a species, the human species, are presumably the only one on this planet capable of distinguishing between moral justice and spiritual decrepitude. This study of MOTIVATION is an element within the work of the artists we are seeking for this exhibition. We have been extremely fortunate to be creating an exciting, diverse, and active meeting place for artists and viewers alike, in a warm and positive virtual atmosphere since 2003. All mediums except video are eligible.
