PHOTOGRAPHY CONFERENCE CALL FOR PAPERS - December 31, 2009

Within the framework of the artistic research project '(in)site, site-specific photography revised, applied to the archaeological site Sagalassos' an international conference is organised, aiming to explore the relationship between photography and history. How do photographers visualize heritage or, broader, history? What is the importance of place, particularly the place that remains after events took place. A related topic, central in the theory of photography and photography itself, is time. This conference also focuses on how photographers depict the past, when time has become 'past time'. The theme Imaging History, photography after the fact offers an opportunity to explore, both on a theoretic and artistic level, how history can be captured.

CALL FOR SMALL PHOTOGRAPHY - November 17, 2009

Small works are created for a reason and are unique in their message. They command a unique interaction with the viewer and inspire reactions that larger images might not. There's an intimacy to peering into a smaller subject, a motive to get close. From the beauty of a 4x5 contact print to the quaintness of a Polaroid, or a 3x3 inch print mounted on 11x11 inch board, there's a variety of reasons to work small and we want to see it. Why do you make small art? What can a smaller format bring to your vision that a larger format cannot? How does the presentation of an image effect the viewer's relationship and response to your art? Are you asking them to get close? What reaction do you want when you get them there? WWA would like to invite makers of small photo art to submit for our returning 2008 exhibit "WEE!". Entry fee.

NATIONAL JURIED PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: BLUE - November 9, 2009.

BLUE is an unusual call for submissions in that we are interested in any and all photographs that explore the concept of blue. In antiquity and the Renaissance, blue was the color of luxury, with rare lapis lazuli ground to make pigment. In early photo history, cyanotype photographs enabled otherworldly images to be made of common objects. In music, the nocturne and the blues explore the mood evoked by the color. Forty photographs will be chosen for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont that in some way engage this theme. Photographs may include just a tiny accent, a full symphony or the color, or engage it symbolically and conceptually. To help defray artists' costs, PhotoPlace Gallery will provide free matting and framing for the duration of the exhibition for accepted works on paper that conform to our pre-cut mat sizes. Juror: Los Angeles photographer and educator, Aline Smithson. Exhibition dates: Dec. 3rd through Dec. 30th. Entry fee.

Also acceptable are hand-applied emulsions and polaroid or solvent transfers. In addition, we welcome images made using pinhole and plastic cameras and through-the-viewfinder techniques. Gelatin silver and digital prints combined with an alternative process or that depart from traditional practice are admissible. For example, digital prints of scanned wet-plate tintypes or ambrotypes are acceptable. Entry fee.
