PORTRAIT COMPETITION - September 24, 2008

The 1st Annual Juried Portrait Competition and Exhibition will be held from October 13-November 28, 2008. All artists are invited to submit CDs or DVDs of their 2D or 3D work. Any medium is acceptable but no photographs, reproductions or giclees please. Quality of draftsmanship and values will be taken into consideration. The exhibit will be juried by award winning portrait artist, Ying-He Liu, who is represented by seven portrait galleries in the US, and who served as faculty member at the Portrait Society of America's10th National Conference in 2008. Awards will be given: 1st Place -$1,000, 2nd Place -$500, 3rd Place -$250. Participants will be notified by e-mail. Entry fee.

CALL FOR ARTISTS - October 10, 2008

URBAN LEGENDS/RURAL MYTHS - Call for Artists. Purdue University Galleries (West Lafayette, Indiana) invite entries for a national exhibition of contemporary art that inspires NEW myths, imagined histories and tall tales. The exhibition will be presented in the Stewart Center Gallery from March 9 through April 26, 2009 and will serve as inspiration for creative writing sessions and lectures discussing human mythology. There is no entry fee, but exhibiting artists will be responsible for shipping. All media eligible, including new and emerging technologies.

CALL FOR FILM/PERFORMANCE/VISUAL ART ENTRIES - November 7, 2008

MONO NO AWARE is not a film festival; its focus is the cinematic experience. Inspired by the unique qualities of live performance and viewing film prints, it encourages live music, theatrical performance, audio and additional visuals to accompany the film piece. MONO NO AWARE is open to experimental filmmakers, fine artists, poets and musicians; to any and all persons working or interested in making work using the film medium. Entries on Super8 or 16mm film only; no digital video submissions will be accepted. The event will be held on Sunday November 30, 2008 at 6pm. Entry fee.

YOUNG FILMMAKERS COMPETITION - September 19, 2008

For the 16th time IFHP organises the Young Film & Video Creators' Competition. The main theme is affordable housing, subthemes: the hidden walls and many faces of a city. EMERGE is an art zine designed to connect emerging Midwest artists with galleries in the region. JURIED CLAY/CERAMICS COMPETITION - September 5, 2008

The Bemidji Community Art Center and the Bemidji State University Visual Arts Dept announce the 6th annual, It's Only Clay National Juried Ceramics Competition and Exhibition. This years juror is artist and potter, Linda Christianson. It's Only Clay is dedicated to functional clay vessels. All accepted works will be on display at the BCAC, Nov 7th through Dec 20th, 2008. EMERGING ARTISTS PRIZE - October 1, 2008

The prize will award $100,000 in acquisitions between the finalists and host a finalist TEN exhibition with accompanying publication. The contest's grand prize winner will receive a cash prize of up to $30,000 and the winning design will be painted on 16 of the most visible oil tanks at the Sprague Energy Corp. tank farm in South Portland. ARTS & HUMANITIES FELLOWSHIPS IN ROME - November 15, 2008

The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the Rome Prize competition. One of the leading overseas centers for independent study and advanced research in the arts and the humanities, the Academy offers up to thirty fellowships for periods ranging from six months to two years. Rome Prize winners reside at the Academy's eleven-acre center in Rome and receive room and board, a study or studio, and a stipend. Stipends for six-month fellowships are $12,500 and stipends for eleven-month fellowships are $25,000. Fellowships are awarded in the following related fields: Architecture, Design (including graphic, fashion, industrial, interior, lighting, set, and sound design, engineering, urban planning, and other related design fields), Historic Preservation and Conservation (including architectural design, public policy, and the conservation of works of art), Landscape Architecture, Fellowships are also awarded in: Literature; Musical Composition; Visual Arts. As social mores become more restrictive, expression becomes less free. In our increasingly polarized society, deep divisions allow for less freedom of expression. We, as Americans, are divided more and more by politics (liberals vs. conservatives), social values (traditionalists vs. modernists), religion (fundamentalists vs. everyone else), race, ethnicity, gender, and age. "Taboo Topics" invites participants to use their artistic talents to explore and express the forbidden.
